Though it took roughly a half-hour longer than anticipated, the preliminary results from King County elections came in around 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 8.
As of the afternoon of Nov. 9, Democrat Mark Mullet led Republican challenger Chad Magendanz in the 5th District Senate race, turning out 52.75 percent approval, or 25,323 votes. Magendanz received 47.16 percent, or 22,642 votes.
Mullet told the Reporter in a phone conversation Wednesday that while he felt good about Tuesday night’s results for his race, the challenges that Democrats are now facing at the national level “kind of put a pit in my stomach.” He added he promises to continue working to solve local traffic issues.
“The fact that voters put their confidence in their local candidates means a lot to me,” Mullet said.
Democrat incumbent Roger Goodman was well ahead in the 45th District Position 1 race over Republican challenger, Sammamish Deputy Mayor Ramiro Valderrama. Goodman garnered 64.74 percent approval to Valderrama’s 35.13 percent of the vote. For 45th District, Position 2, incumbent Larry Springer, who prefers the Democratic Party, is running unopposed and received 96.8 percent.
The races for seats in the 5th District House were separated by mere percentage points. Democratic challenger Jason Ritchie trailed Republican Jay Rodne by 102 votes in the 5th District House Position 1 race with 49.85 percent approval, or 23,498 votes, to Rodne’s 50.06 percent turnout, or 23,600 votes.
Republican Paul Graves was ahead of Democrat Darcy Burner in the 5th District Position 2 race. Graves received 51.06 percent approval, or 24,246 votes, to Burner’s 48.85 percent approval, or 23,199 votes.
