Recruiting comes to whirlwind finish for Skyline’s Greene | Prep sports news

Damian Greene was almost out of options.

The Skyline senior running back and defensive back, who helped the Spartans to the class 4A state title during the fall, knew he wanted to continue playing football in college. But with the recruiting process nearing its end, he wasn’t sure he would have that chance.

“I didn’t really have many choices,” Greene said at Wednesday’s signing ceremony at Skyline. “I wasn’t being heavily recruited for football and that has always been my passion.”

Until recently, Greene said his plan was to put in his best effort during the track and field season and hopefully earn a scholarship somewhere that would allow him to walk-on to the football team.

Enter Chris Tormey and the Wyoming Cowboys.

Tormey was an assistant with the 1991 University of Washington team that shared the National Championship with Miami (Fla.) and added yet another face with Evergreen State ties along with third year coach Dave Christensen and offensive line coach Pete Kaligis, both former Huskies themselves.

Greene too has a connection to the University of Washington, where his father Danny played and eventually earned team captain status.

In Damian, the Cowboys saw a player who could add speed and playmaking ability in the secondary. But for the Skyline senior, the offer came as somewhat of a surprise.

“I gave them a call and talked to the defensive backs coach and he seemed really interested,” Greene said. “He put the head coach on the phone and he was talking about the program. He asked me if I knew what just happened and I said, ‘no, not really,’ and he said they just offered me a full-ride scholarship.”

So in roughly a week, Greene went from under-recruited walk-on candidate to Division I scholarship football player.

Once the gravity of the offer set in, Greene said his focus immediately shifted to how he can best serve in his role with the Cowboys, which will be on defense and likely special teams, at least early in his career.

Wyoming opens the season in Austin against the Texas Longhorns and while the powerhouse from the Big 12 will no doubt be the heavy favorite, Greene will be ready for any opportunity that comes his way.

“I’m very excited,” Greene said of getting to Laramie and beginning his collegiate career. “I want to do anything I can to help my team.”
