Searching for Issaquah residents committed to Ruth Kees’ vision

Ruth Kees was a teacher, mentor and role model for those committed to pursuing the vision of a sustainable Issaquah.

Ruth Kees was a teacher, mentor and role model for those committed to pursuing the vision of a sustainable Issaquah.

As a grassroots activist for more than four decades in the Issaquah Basin, Kees advocated for preservation of landmarks and natural areas; sustainable development; recycling programs; and protection of the Issaquah Valley Aquifer and Tiger Mountain. She brought environmental issues to the forefront of community consciousness and inspired citizen activism, leadership and participation.

Do you know someone who embodies these same attributes, with a passion for conservation and the environment?

Do you know an inspirational community member who is dedicated to sustainability? Each year, the City of Issaquah honors an individual for their exemplary efforts with the “Ruth Kees Environmental Award for a Sustainable Community.”

The award recognizes the efforts of individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to protecting and preserving Issaquah’s natural resources for a sustainable community.

All nominations – which are due by 5 p.m. March 15 – will be reviewed by an award committee. The committee may then recommend potential award recipients to the Mayor and Council President, who will make the final decision.

The award will be presented at an Issaquah City Council meeting in May.

Recipients of the Ruth Kees Environmental Award receive the privilege of selecting a tree to be planted in a future honorary “Grove of Trees.”

New this year, the recipient will receive a $500 award, thanks to a generous endowment from the Ruth and Dan Kees Estate. Award winners will also be memorialized with the recipient’s name engraved on a commemorative plaque.

In addition, public recognition for the recipient’s accomplishments will be made through a Mayoral and Council Proclamation and announcements in local newspapers and city publications.
