Bike drive sends 278 bikes to Africa

The 12th annual African Bike Drive in Sammamish May 20 collected more than 270 bikes bound for Sierra Leone, Africa.

In all, the ARAS Foundation, which puts on the drive, has collected more than 7,600 bikes for Ghana and Sierra Leone, Africa. This year it collected 278 bikes plus hundreds of bike parts.

This is less than it raised last year, which Mary Trask, ARAS Foundation community service director, said is likely because the foundation wasn’t collecting bikes leading up to the drive, due to lack of storage, as it has done in the past.

“Although the numbers are less, I remind myself that there will be 278 smiles on the faces of new bike owners that would not have appeared without this drive,” Trask said in an email.
