Issaquah’s doubles team of Sam Garrard and Sabrina Norton secured the No. 2 seed to the 4A state tennis tournament Friday, winning three of four matches at the KingCo championships.
Teammates Selena Lustig and Rachel Gonchar battled their way to the championship match, but were forced to withdraw from the tournament as other commitments prevented them from entering the state tournament.
Garrard and Norton defeated Redmond’s Jeneal Carter and Dana Simmons, 6-1, 6-0, then beat Woodinville’s Cora Byers and Jenny Foote, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semifinals.
They lost to eventual champions Fiona Cerf and Arina Abbott from Garfield, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 before defeating Skyline’s Molly Knutson and Alyson Opitz, 6-1, 6-1 for the second seed to state.
Knutson and Opitz still have a chance to reach the state tournament this Saturday when they face off against the No. 3 team from WesCo at the University of Washington.
The pair of Spartans, who were the beneficiaries of Issaquah’s Lustig and Gonchar withdrawing, defeated Redmond’s Marissa Craig and Sara Boye, 6-1, 7-5 and Newport’s Faith Mach and Allison Lee, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the semifinals. They then fell to Lustig and Gonchar, 6-1, 6-3.
No local singles players advanced to the state tournament.
Issaquah’s Dayna Bennett worked her way to the semifinals where she lost to Newport’s Amie Vo, 6-0, 6-0. She was then eliminated in a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Redmond’s Sarah Du.
The Eagles’ Alyssa Wilson won two matches to reach the quarterfinals, before falling 6-0, 6-0 to the eventual champion, Angela Chen from Newport.
The boys and girls 4A state tournament runs May 27-28 in Vancouver, Wash., at the Vancouver Tennis Center.
