Area athletes prepared for district meets
Tradition held strong for the Skyline track and field teams at last Friday’s KingCo 3A championships.
The girls won their seventh consecutive KingCo 3A title, and the boys took their third straight crown.
“We really wanted to leave 3A with another Kingco championship,” Skyline girls coach Dawn Geiser said. “The girls rose to the challenge, and I couldn’t be more proud of their accomplishment.”
Skyline claimed the title by winning five events and earning 168.5 points. Issaquah came in second, with 135.
Three individuals and two relay teams won league championships for the Spartans. Kayli Kohlrus won the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 11 1/4 inches; McKensie Gelber won the javelin with a toss of 125-9, and Kiara Williams won the 100 hurdles in 15.23 seconds. The 400 relay won the title with the fastest 3A time in the state, 48.97 seconds — despite changing the alignment of the team the day before the league meet.
“I just kept my fingers crossed that we could get the stick around the track,” Geiser said. “The hand-offs weren’t perfect, but we ran a season best. I was extremely relieved.”
The team is comprised of Kaylyn Berry, Shealee O’Donnell, Danielle Matthews and Williams.
The 800 relay also won the league title in 1:44.44. That team included Berry, O’Donnell, Williams and Rachael Butenko. In all, the Spartans qualified 12 individuals for the Sea-King District meet — five of whom will compete in multiple events.
The Skyline boys earned 138 points to claim the title, finishing ahead of Mount Si’s 108. Two individuals and one relay claimed league championships. Simon Sorrenson won three individual crowns, taking first in the 800 (1:58.03), 1,600 (4:21.04) and 3,200 (9:34.80).
“It was kind of a last-minute thing to keep Simon in all three distance events,” Skyline boys coach Nick Lombardo said. “Doing the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 is a lot to ask from an athlete.”
Sorrenson will only compete in the 1,600 and 3,200 in the Sea-King District meet.
Andrew Gray also won an individual title, taking first in the 110 hurdles in 15.18 seconds. The 400 relay of Dustin Bratten, Andrew Gray, Blake Springer and Alex Lee took the league title in 43.76 seconds.
The Spartans advanced eight individuals and both relays through to the district meet, which wraps up today at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.
Issaquah girls capture second
The Issaquah girls won five individual titles and one relay last Friday to take second.
Johanna Carr paved the way with two wins in 100 (12.32) and 200 (25.43), just edging out Skyline’s Shealee O’Donnell in both races. Bonnie Young won the 800 (2:19.97), Elaine Tran won the 300 hurdles (46.43) and Emee Matthew won the shot put (38-1). The 1,600 relay of Emma Ogilvie, Haida Ikeda, Kaley Allison and Young also took first in 4:06.73. The Eagles advanced nine individuals and all three relay teams on to today’s Sea-King District meet.
The Issaquah boys finished in seventh place with 51 points. Ryan Tiernan won the sole Eagle title, taking first in the 300 hurdles in a time of 40.89. The Eagles advanced three individuals and the 1,600 relay to the district meet.
Eastlake girls
finish fourth
The Eastlake girls track and field team captured fourth in the KingCo 4A league meet, earning 87 points. Inglemoor won the meet with 138 points, followed by Redmond (107) and Garfield (94).
The Wolves earned one league title from Chelsea Orr, who won the 800 in 2:14.76. Orr also took second in the 1,600 in a time of 5:02.7. Elizabeth Kirsten and Lan VoBa finished second in the discus and triple jump, respectively. Eastlake is sending five individuals and all three relays to the District 2/4 meet, which begins today in Vancouver, Wash.
The Eastlake boys finished sixth overall with 62 points. Bothell won the meet with 122 points.
The Wolves earned two league championships, one from Dan Sloat in the 800 (1:55.17) and another from the 1,600 relay 3:24.46. Eastlake is sending seven individuals and both relays to the district meet.
