On Aug. 30, Bloodworks Northwest will be partnering with the city of Sammamish to host a blood drive at the City Hall Council Chambers.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bloodworks Northwest will be taking appointments to draw blood from donors in order to help boost the blood supply in the state. In a press release from the city, Bloodworks Northwest said the community blood supply in Washington and Oregon is at “one- to two-day emergency levels, meaning there isn’t enough locally-supplied blood for patients in need.”

King County Executive Dow Constantine’s challenged the 39 mayors of King County to give blood on Aug. 16 and Sammamish Mayor Christie Malchow will join fellow Sammamish citizens in giving blood on Thursday.

“For me, participating in the #BoldforBlood challenge was an obvious yes,” Malchow said in the press release. “It only takes a small amount of time to help save the life of someone in our region. I encourage all of my friends, neighbors and colleagues here in Sammamish to join me in giving whole blood on Aug. 30, or to visit bloodworksnw.org to find a time to donate that works in your schedule.”

Once donated, the blood will be separated into the component parts of plasma, platelets and red cells. Those components are then used for transfusions to patients in need of the blood components either individually or in various combinations. Donations to Bloodworks Northwest are served to more than 90 hospitals in the Northwest.
