Maywood Middle School hosts first district-wide Rubik’s Cube competition

Maywood Middle School hosted more than 60 students from around the Issaquah School District for the first district-wide Rubik’s Cube competition on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Held for elementary and middle school students, the Rubik’s Cube competition was created to give students in the district an opportunity to compete against others in their age bracket and to build clubs around the activity.

Ron Ciraulo, math teacher and Rubik’s Cube club supervisor at Maywood, led the competition on stage on Saturday. Ciraulo said the Maywood club was started in 2014 when some of his students had been sneaking cubes in to class to play with. He saw it as an opportunity to organize the students into using the activity to build the math skills necessary to complete the cubes.

As the club has developed over the years, interest and participation has grown, not just at Maywood but at other schools around the district, like Beaver Lake Middle School.

The district event began with a collaborative segment that tasked students to complete a set of multiple cubes as a group, before moving on to the single competition.

Ciraulo was happy with how the event came together and hopes it will spark more students around the district to get involved and form their own Rubik’s Cube clubs.

In addition to preparing for the state competition, Circaulo said the Maywood club is also planning to hold a school-wide competition in March to drive more interest to the activity.

The event was sponsored by the You Can Do the Rubik’s Cube Program, an education and outreach organization started by the Rubik’s Brand Ltd in 1974.
