New Year’s Day will serve frigid dip

First ever Polar Plunge at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Adventurous people are invited to take the plunge at Lake Sammamish State Park to ring in the new year.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 on the shores of Sunset Beach, people will be treated to festivities before taking a dip in the frigid waters at 11 a.m. at the Polar Plunge at Lake Sammamish State Park

“Best way to start the new year is with a clear head and a big splash”, said Robin Spicer, chair of the event. “Plus, the water will most likely be the warmer than the air. A cool plunge followed by warm beach fun — no better thrill than starting 2020 by becoming your very own hero.”

Following the plunge, participants are invited to warm up hot drinks, concessions and Ivar’s clam chowder.

A minimum $10 per entry donation is requested. The first 200 registered participants will receive a Polar Plunge knitted hat and their choice of a coffee or hot cocoa. Register online at www.lakesammamishfriends.org/events.

The organizers are encouraging participants to wear costumes and team T-shirts. Spectators are welcome to cheer on the brave swimmers as they take a dunk in the chilly waters of Lake Sammamish.

Jan. 1 is a free day at state parks, so no Discover Pass or parking fee will be needed.

Polar Plunge is sponsored by Rowley Properties, the city of Issaquah and the city of Sammamish.

The event is presented by Friends of Lake Sammamish State Park, a 501c(3) non-profit dedicated to supporting, promoting and enhancing the park.
