2010 marked another impressive year in local high-school athletics. Here’s The Reporter’s take on the five most memorable athletic accomplishments for Eastlake, Eastside Catholic, Issaquah and Skyline during the previous year.
EASTLAKE
Girls cross country
The Eastlake girls cross country team finished just six points shy of its third straight state crown, narrowly getting edged by Eisenhower of Yakima. It was the fifth consecutive top-three state placement for the Wolves.
Boys basketball
The Wolves made their first state appearance in seven years and fourth ever in school history in 2010, finishing one game shy of placing. Eastlake stared with a 69-48 win over Lake Stevens before losing 78-57 to Kentwood and 67-49 to Walla Walla.
Boys Golf
Li Wang finished eighth overall at the 4A state golf tournament. The freshman shot a 3-over par 147 for two days of golf at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick.
Football
Eastlake pushed second-ranked Curtis to the brink, but came up just shy of reaching the state quarterfinals. The Wolves fell 21-14 to the Vikings in Tacoma, ending an impressive season with a 8-3 record.
Boys Track & Field
The Wolves rallied for a 12th-place finish at the 4A state track and field championships. The 1,600 relay of Curtis McCarson, Daniel Jackstadt, Paul Kupcis and Brandon Cole highlighted the event with a second-place finish and school-record time of 3:19.86.
EASTSIDE CATHOLIC
Girls lacrosse
Eastside Catholic made school history in May when the Crusaders beat Kennedy Catholic 17-5 to winning the Division II girls state lacrosse title. It was the school’s first state team title since girls cross country team won in 1984.
Boys swimming
Star swimmer Ethan Hallowell won two more state titles, taking the 100 and 200 freestyles in All-American times of 45.46 seconds and 1 minute, 40.48 seconds, respectively. The state titles marked his fifth and sixth in three years. The Stanford University-bound athlete is targeting his seventh and eighth in 2011.
Volleyball
Eastside Catholic came up just shy of capturing its first state volleyball title, losing to rival Seattle Prep in four games — 23-25, 25-11, 25-16, 25-20 — in the 3A state championship match.
Football
The Crusaders came up one game — two points — shy of reaching the Metro football playoffs. Eastside lost a 45-43 heartbreaker to Bainbridge in the final regular-season game. Eastside bounced back from a losing season the previous year to finish with a 6-4 record in 2010.
Baseball
An impressive run ended just shy of the postseason for the Eastside Catholic baseball team. The Crusaders, who finished 15-8, advanced all the way to the league semifinals, only to drop their final two games to West Seattle and O’Dea.
ISSAQUAH
Volleyball
Issaquah finished one match shy of a perfect season, falling to Jackson in three games — 25-13, 25-22, 25-12 — to place second in state. The Eagles had won 20 consecutive matches headed into the 4A state championship.
Girls basketball
It wasn’t the ending it hoped for, but Issaquah still had a strong run in 2010 finishing sixth in state. The Eagles beat Lewis and Clark 51-49 and Lake Stevens 67-47, then lost 58-40 to Auburn Riverside and 71-54 to Garfield. It was the program’s seventh state appearance in 10 years.
Girls swimming
Issaquah finished sixth in the 4A state swim meet. Sophomores Stacy Maier and Kayla Flaten had big days, earning a pair of fourth-place finishes. Maier was fourth in the 100 backstroke and Flaten finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
Football
The Eagles overcame the loss of their starting quarterback, Ethan Kalin, to win four straight games and advance to the state quarterfinals. Issaquah and backup quarterback Braden Bouwman led rival Skyline early in the playoff before falling 42-21, ending the season with a 9-3 record.
Girls Track & Field
Pole vaulter Eva Perry cleared a new school record of 11 feet, 9 inches, finishing fourth in the state. Haley Jacobson also earned a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters. The duo helped the Eagles to a 20th place team finish.
SKYLINE
Girls swimming
For the second consecutive season and the second time in school history, the Skyline swim team brought home a team state championship. The Spartans dominated with 220 team points, finishing well ahead of the next closest competitor Newport (157.5). The Spartans claimed four state titles, led by Katie Kinnear. The junior, who transfered from Eastlake at the beginning of the school year, finished first in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and helped the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams to championships.
Boys Track & Field
Kasen Williams won the 4A state triple jump title — his second career individual championship — with a leap of 47 feet, 6 inches and placed second in the long jump and high jump, single-handedly lifting the Spartans to a second-place overall finish in state.
Football
Skyline made the state championship game for the fourth consecutive year, but came up just shy of its fourth straight state championship. The Spartans, who had two late drives to potentially tie, fell 24-16 to Ferris of Spokane.
Girls soccer
Skyline defeated Skyview of Vancouver 2-1 to place third in state. The Spartans’ bid at a third straight state championship came up short with a 1-0 loss to Tahoma in the state semifinals.
Boys basketball
The boys basketball team made just the second state appearance in school history and grabbed the first ever placement, finishing eighth overall. The Spartans lost to Jackson, beat Davis and Stanwood, before losing to Mead, 49-39, in the fifth-eighth place consolation game.
