The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) is one of the fastest growing districts in the state, and is looking to the community for help in deciding how to handle future growth.
District residents are urged to go online and complete a survey to help LWSD officials decide on their primary focus when they consider redrawing school boundaries to redistributed enrollment. Friday, Oct. 3, is the last day to complete the survey.
Data gathered will be used by a LWSD staff committee to develop a recommendation to be approved by the superintendent before Kindergarten enrollment opens in February.
Enrollment district-wide stood at 26,615 as of Sept. 29. By the 2017-18 school year, enrollment is expected to grow by more than 2,000 students.
At a Sept. 8 study session, district officials determined that the LWSD would need to add 71 more classrooms to handle the expected increase. While officials have adopted a plan to add at least 69 classrooms by that time at a cost of $20 million, the new boundaries would help distribute the levels of students across the district to make more efficient use of the new spaces.
Parents unable to complete the survey will not be out of options. The committee will hold four open house sessions in December to enable parents to weigh in on the proposed new boundaries.
The survey is available online under the “News – LWSD Reboundary” section at www.lwsd.org.
