Eastlake Wolves senior defender/midfielder Megan McCaughey exudes poise on the soccer pitch.
Eastlake head coach Marc Wilson said McCaughey has a natural ability to control the ball with her feet despite pressure from opposing teams’ players around her.
“You rarely see Megan give the ball away under any conditions,” Wilson said. “She knows what to do before the ball is at her feet which is something you can’t coach and you can’t teach. It is something she has instinctively picked up over the years.”
McCaughey, who is one of the Wolves’ four team captains, immediately impressed Wilson with her ability to lead her teammates in early season practices.
“I knew from pretty early on that she was going to be an extension of the coaching staff on and off the field. She hasn’t disappointed,” he said.
The Wolves are off to a strong 4-0-1 start in non-league action. The Wolves faced the Skyline Spartans in their Class 4A KingCo opener Sept. 24. As of press time, results of this contest were unavailable.
“We’re on a roll and we’re playing well,” Wilson said. “The competition has been good. We’re still working through things and moving pieces around to see where everyone is comfortable and how they react and respond.”
McCaughey thinks the sky is the limit for the Wolves this fall.
“As a team we definitely want to go as far as we can. Obviously winning state would be the ultimate goal,” she said. “We are a true team. We all enjoy being around each other and love playing the sport together.”
