The condition of the state’s education system will be the topic of a speech and open discussion April 20 in Issaquah, led by Kelly Munn, State Field Director for the Washington League of Education Voters (LEV).

Munn will in Issaquah at the monthly meeting of the 5th District Democrats. The meeting is open to the public.

Munn, a resident of Sammamish and a long-time activist in the Issaquah School District, will talk about the state’s achievement gap – the gap between Whites and non-Whites in standardized testing – and the squeeze on funding for public education, teacher salaries and graduation rates.

Education in this state is in trouble, according to the nonpartisan LEV. Munn notes that Gov. Chris Gregoire’s Washington Learns report on the state of Washington education stated: “For the first time, public education officials are producing a generation of students less educated than their parents.”

Munn has been active in the Issaquah Parent Teacher Student Association for years, serving as a legislative representative and winning a number of statewide leadership awards from the group.

The meeting will be held from 7–8:30 p.m. at the King County Library Service Center, 960 Newport Way NW, Issaquah.

The 5th District Democrats represents Democrats in Washington’s 5th Legislative District, which stretches from Lake Sammamish to Snoqualmie Pass. It includes Issaquah, Maple Valley, Hobart, Fall City, Snoqualmie, North Bend and Snoqualmie Pass.

The Washington League of Education Voters, funded by Washington citizens, works to support students in this state, from early learning through college.
