The ARAS Foundation will host its ninth annual African Bike Drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Sammamish City Hall.
Last year, with the assistance of the Village Bicycle Project organization, the foundation loaded and shipped 642 bikes and bike parts to Ghana, Africa.
“In the nine years that we have held this drive, we have shipped over 5,000 bikes to Africa,” said Mary Trask, the ARAS community service director.
Donated bikes and bike parts are tax deductible.
Volunteers are needed from 8 a.m. until approximately 5 p.m. to prepare the bikes for shipment. Handlebars and seats are lowered and the pedals removed in order to conserve space in the shipping container, which will be at City Hall. Trask said they encourage people and groups to assist by seeking bike donations in their neighborhoods, schools, places of worship and work.
