A spectacular hydroplane crash on the final day of the Tastin’ and Racin’ event on Lake Sammamish over the weekend ended well with both drivers reportedly uninjured.

The Grand Prix Hydroplanes are one of the biggest and fastest of the powerboat categories.

The accident occurred in the final heat of competition and involved “GP-17,” driven by Dustin Echols, and “GP-19,” driven by Ryan Mallow.

According to race director Jon Courtright, after the competition of the first lap, three boats entered turn one together.

Mallow’s boat bounced on the water and became airborne – before coming into contact with Echols’ boat, badly damaging it.

Both boats landed right side up.

The boat race was stopped.

Tastin’ n Racin’s coordinated rescue effort involved APBA Region 10 Water Rescue, Seafair Security, and East Side Fire and Rescue.

Echols was transferred to the Swedish Hospital clinic across from the park entrance for a check-up and was later released.
