Eastlake senior given Cory O’Brien award; Western students receive scholarships; Skyline grad earns honors

Eastlake senior given Cory O’Brien award

Eastlake High School senior Anne Marolich was awarded an $8,000 scholarship from the Cory O’Brien Memorial Fund.

The Cory O’Brien Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004, shortly after the 2002 Eastlake graduate died suddenly from a rare form of viral pneumonia. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior at EHS who demonstrates a strong desire for learning, community service and “lives life to the fullest.”

Marolich has worked with the homeless, helped raise money for Children’s Hospital and volunteered at a local elementary school. She overcame challenges in learning and graduated with a 3.6 GPA. She plans to attend Washington State University and study elementary education.

Western students receive scholarships

Two Western Washington University students from Issaquah received President’s Scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year, WWU officials announced recently.

Summer Thompson, daughter of George and Sherri Thompson of Issaquah, received a $500 scholarship. Julien Verbrugghe, son of Christian and Nicole Verbrugghe of Issaquah, received a $1,000 scholarship.

President’s Scholarships are awarded to approximately the top 8 to 10 percent of incoming freshmen and transfer students, and are based on superior academic achievement.

Thompson, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.8 GPA at Liberty High School, and is interested in becoming a human services major. Thompson is a former honor roll member and ASB representative. She hopes to open her own bakery after graduating from Western.

Verbrugghe, also an incoming freshman, earned a 3.72 GPA at Issaquah High School, and is interested in becoming an engineering technology major. Verbrugghe lettered in men’s swimming at the varsity level four years in a row at IHS. He hopes to work in vehicle design and engineering after graduating from Western.

Skyline grad earns honors

Matthew Fisser was designated a Texas Christian University Scholar for the Spring semester of 2008. Fisser, a 2006 Skyline High School graduate, also earned a place on the Dean’s Honors List, M.J. Neeley School of Business.

Eastlake alum graduates Stanford

Rachel Friedman, a 2004 graduate of Eastlake High School, graduated from Stanford University on June 15, 2008 with a Bachelors of Science in Earth Systems. She was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Rachel will be interning at the EPA in Washington D.C. under a Stanford fellowship this summer and returning to Stanford in the Fall to complete her Masters in Earth Systems.
