At salmon science camp kids swim in knowledge

It was nature hike day at the Salmon Science Camp. The 6 to 8-year-olds in the camp, held at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery, is run by Friends of Issaquah Salmon Hatchery and is a week long camp where kids learn about salmon, science and the Pacific Northwest.

The campers, under the guidance of teacher Celina Steiger, assistant teacher Erin and camp helpers Anna, Halle and Anna-Linnea, learn about the native plants and animals to the area, including salmon, preform water quality tests and use microscopes. They also study tracks and look at the skulls and pelts of local animals.

On Thursday, July 30, the group of 10 campers walked along Issaquah Creek where they spent part of the warm afternoon looking for macro invertebrate, or salmon food. During the walk the students learned about invasive plant species and why those are dangerous to the native plants.
