The city of Sammamish came into some money earmarked for design work regarding the replacement of a city-owned culvert along Zaccuse Creek, a potential spawning ground for Lake Sammamish’s rare freshwater fish.
Sammamish residents got a glimpse of what Southeast Fourth Street might look as part of that completed town center, a plan that city officials and community members began crafting in 2006. The presented roadway, shown at the Jan. 28 open house at Pine Lake Middle School, is a preliminary design concept.

Christopher Lee, 15, has been volunteering to educate more than 140 students and teachers at a school in the Kangemi Slums of Nairobi, Kenya. The opportunity to volunteer at the school, run through the charity organization Hamomi Children’s Centre — which began as a community project in 1999 and established a Seattle base in the late 2000s — arose when Lee was in middle school. Hamomi’s mission to improve the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa resonated with him.

It will take about a year for Republic Services to prepare to serve the entire city, according to Sammamish staff. The company will need to establish the necessary infrastructure; develop schedules and routes; purchase trucks and equipment; and conduct community outreach and education.
The district’s board of directors will vote on the 2016 bond measure, which will fund new schools and repair older ones, at the Jan. 25 meeting. The public can comment on the potential funding plan via an online survey, available through Jan. 15
