Why I am voting no on I-522? Facts should be the basis for public policy decisions regarding health and safety, not unfounded ideological biases. There have been over 500 studies conducted during the last two decades that have all reached the same conclusion: Genetically engineered foods are safe for human consumption. Even the American Medical Association says “there is no scientific justification for special labeling of bioengineered foods.” Passage of I-522 would prove to be costly, it is unnecessary, it would mean more state bureaucracy (did I say costly?) and would lead to higher food prices for all of us. GMO improved crops have safely increased incomes of thousands of American farmers and yield benefits have helped provide food for millions of hungry people in the world. Trying to scare consumers away from safe, genetically engineered foods would be a giant step backwards. Vote No on I-522.
