On Saturday, the Sammamish King County Library will host a discussion of future technologies and the altered human experience with science fiction novelist Robert Harken.
Harken is a developer of technology strategies for business and the author of “Life on Nubis.”
“Nubis,” released in January, looks ahead to the year 2040. Machines have replaced humans in nearly every sector of the economy. Havens of the Earth’s destitute are encouraged to join expeditions to establish colonies on the planets of far-flung solar systems. Father and daughter colonists Aiden and Sarah Haven board one of the departing starships on what they expect to be a grand adventure; instead, they find themselves fighting for survival on an unforgiving planet.
As shown in a recent nonfiction academic paper by the author, “Social Capitalism,” Harken believes human displacement by technology is a potential reality in the face of advances in Artificial Intelligence. But he also sees the opportunity to adjust the economy — and thus guide civilization away from the dystopia portrayed in his fiction.
“A combination of technical innovations and our behavioral responses have created a new capitalism adjustment opportunity that can prevent the future economic collapse,” Harken writes. “The opportunity arises in people’s use of technology for relating to other people.”
The discussion will take place from 11 a.m. to noon in the library’s meeting room. The library is located at 825 228th Avenue SE, adjacent to city hall.
