Each year a group of teens and adults from Issaquah Christian Church (ICC) travel to Mexico to build homes.
Once completed, the homes are given to the locals at no cost.
In past years, a group of usually about 38 members of the ICC has traveled to a location near Tijuana, to take part in a more than week-long project.
During those years, over 20 homes were built, along with a church and a schoolhouse.
Each house takes approximately four days to complete.
The ICC group is part of the larger organization known as Go, Inc., which was started by the Gladstone Christian Church in Portland, Ore.
Go Inc. now includes 14 churches from Oregon and Washington, all working together building homes, schools and churches in Mexico.
To participate in Go Inc. missions, teens and adults must raise the necessary dollars to travel to Mexico for the nine day build.
In winter, their Christmas Tree lot during November and December raises valuable funds.
In the summertime, they man a massive fireworks tent for seven days in June, leading up to the Fourth of July and the churches annual “Freedom Day” celebration.
The new expanded fireworks stand will be well stocked with “TNT” fireworks, the most popular brand of fireworks in the country.
The safe and sane fireworks will include a huge display of items like helicopters, sparklers, fountains, in both individual and special packages.
Although not legal in the City of Issaquah, and other cities in the region, these fireworks may be enjoyed throughout unincorporated King County.
Proceeds from these youth-led events are used to support the Mexico home building program.
Nearly as important as the benefit the work brings to poor communities in Mexico is the impact on the lives of the participating ICC teens, as they begin understanding the importance of helping those in other countries in need of shelter and basic human services.
Many teens have felt that their lives were changed forever by participating in this program.
The fireworks fundraising sales at the ICC property at 10328 Issaquah-Hobart Rd SE will run until Saturday, July 4.
A sample home, similar to the houses built near Tijuana, will be on display at ICC during the sale.
The Freedom Day Celebration on Saturday, July 4, will begin at 11 a.m.
A Classic Car Show and Shine will bring dozens of cars for display to the lawn at the church.
This is an open show; anyone in the community is welcome to bring their cars and motorcycles.
A special feature of the show will be the 1934 Ford 3-window coupe of Jim Cooper from Tacoma.
The yellow chopped Coop’s Coupe has won numerous awards including the Best in Washington State during the 2002 Seattle Roadster Show.
The 800 horsepower coupe will be on display all day long.
Live music will take place throughout the day featuring local band, Prevailing Words, and other local artists.
Admission is free.
