Liberty students produce another remarkable band video

Hamann directed last year's award-winning entry, so there was a certain amount of expectation to see what he would come up with this year.

Proving again that is a hotbed of creative talent and energy, Liberty High School has produced another amazing video for the annual “The Rock, Wood-fired Pizza & Spirits Battle of the Bands” competition.

Last year, Liberty took the $10,000 first prize in the competition, which since 2007 has asked Washington high schools to make a music video to go along with a performance of their high school marching band.

Though the odds of repeat might be long, Liberty senior Jeremy Hamann has ensured that his school gets plenty of attention with an enormously creative and polished video set to Motley Crue’s 80s rock classic “Dr. Feelgood.”

Hamann directed last year’s award-winning entry, so there was a certain amount of expectation to see what he would come up with this year.

“This year Jeremy and I spoke, and we talked about not doing it again, as the chances of winning twice in a row would be relatively slim,” said Liberty band teacher Phillip Donley. “After discussing it more with the rest of the band, they thought it was important for the band to represent Liberty again. So it was obvious that the video would have to be over the top.”

And over the top it is. The video features, among other things, a dentist with a chain saw and an enormous David Hasselhoff loose on the streets of Renton.

“We had a brief brain storming session at the beginning of class with all of the band members and there were a lot of very funny random ideas, but we had to find a way to make a story out of it,” Donley said. “So Jeremy started working on the script and he said he would have something knocked out by the end of the weekend.”

Donley said he was amazed by what Hamann was able to do.

“It all worked out way beyond my expectations,” he said. “A few ideas hit the cutting room floor, but that happens when you are limited to the length of a song.”

The video features the custom artwork of band member Kelsey Canaga, as well as 3D animation which was created using the Blender software.

“The band also deserves some recognition,” Donley said. “They did an outstanding job of performing a really complicated arrangement. It has a lot of energy, and it’s at a good length that will keep most people’s attention. The video and music definitely compliment each other very well, and most of that credit has to go to Jeremy’s ability to edit video and his great sense of timing.”

Donley paid tribute to the sponsors of the event, Rock Wood Fired Pizza and radio station “KZOK FM,” which, following this year’s contest, will have contributed $60,000 to high school music programs.
