Carly Calbero, voted one of the best street performers in the nation by Rolling Stone magazine, will be performing Saturday night at Capri Cellars in Issaquah.
21-year-old Calbero said that while performing at Pacific Place in Seattle, a woman who was working for Rolling Stone approached her and said she should apply for their street performer competition. She filled out the paperwork and a couple months later was told that she had been selected as a finalist in the “Street to Stage” competition. While she didn’t win, she did place in the top four.
“I got a bunch of shows after that,” Calbero said. “It’s really helped in getting people’s attention.”
Calbero has lived in the Pacific Northwest for her entire life, and after studying music at Edmonds Community College for a couple years, she decided she wanted to focus solely on her street performing.
“The Rolling Stone thing was really eye opening. I realized I could do this as a career,” Calbero said, who started performing at Pike Place immediately after graduating high school.
Her inspiration? Brandi Carlile, KT Tunstall and other predominant women in music, she said. They inspire her to keep going with music with the hopes that she’ll be able to make it a life-long career.
“I want to write, and put out records, and play music for the rest of my life,” Calbero said.
Calbero’s performances have been based predominately in the Northwest, but next month she and her wife, who is also her drummer, will be traveling to Oregon.
“We’re trying to get out there a little bit more,” she said.
So why Capri Cellars? Calbero said that last time they performed in Issaquah they were at the Farmer’s Market and it was a great experience.
“The people were just amazing and talked to us for a long time,” she said. “And they loved our music so we’re excited to see the people over there again.”
Calbero will be at Capri Cellars from 8 to 10 p.m. tomorrow night. To hear her sing and get more information about her upcoming shows you can visit her website at www.carlycalbero.com.
