Hundreds of tandem and individual paragliders will swarm the Issaquah skies on Saturday for the seventh annual Tiger Mountain Fly-In.
“It’s been getting more and more popular,” said Northwest Paragliding Club director Steven Acord.
The event, which runs from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., offers discounted rates for tandem flights, allowing first-timers a more affordable chance to take to the skies.
“Last year we actually had to turn people away — we ran out of time and pilots,” Acord said.
The NW Paragliding Club hopes to curb that problem this year as 25 tandem pilots are scheduled to guide people safely from the 2,000-foot perch to the landing zone just off of Issaquah-Hobart road.
Online pre-registration is full for tandem flights, but people can still sign up the day of the event for a discounted rate at the landing zone. Tandem flights normally run $165, but will be reduced to $125 the day of. Shuttles to the top of the mountain are included in the cost.
The Fly-In will also feature an acroparaglding demonstration at 2 p.m., full of flips and spins. There will also be a $5 barbecue and several contests, including a raffle for a round-trip for two to a choice destination.
Weather conditions should be ideal. Saturday’s forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures close to 90 degrees.
“We’ve had events where the weather hasn’t been very cooperative, but it looks like it’s going to be great,” Acord said.
All proceeds from the event will go to to the NW Paragliding Club, which provides upkeep on Tiger Mountain. Funds also to help fund and support flying sites throughout Washington, including Rampart, Baldy Butte, Stuart Mountain and Blanchard Mountain.
