Growing cannabis community: Rainier shop welcomes a new strain of consumer

Knowledgeable staff are happy to chat with curious customers

Jakob Miller has seen a change at The Green Door over the last six months, and he likes it.

The general manager of the Rainier Avenue store started sharing information in local media about the research and trends he’s seen in the cannabis industry, and it’s brought in a new kind of customer.

“We’ve welcomed a lot of new customers who are keen to do their own research and ask lots of great questions,” Miller says. “We’re grateful for their support, and we also love teaching them about our products.”

As a community store that nurtures longterm relationships with customers, The Green Door loves this new batch of inquisitive customers hailing from Bellevue, Issaquah and Mercer Island.

“Our budtenders and staff have been loving the new regulars. Not only do customer questions make for great conversation, but it encourages us to learn even more about our products,” Miller says.

Miller likes having a mix of staff in the store, some with a wealth of experience and some brimming with enthusiasm. He knows it can be hard to get a foot in the door in the cannabis industry, and is happy to give younger budtenders a training ground.

“It’s really cool to see staff come into their own, improving both their customer service and their product knowledge. Every budtender has their area of expertise, and our regular customers find their favorites.”

Beyond the joint

Smoking is no longer the only way to consume cannabis, and Miller has seen increased demand for topicals, tinctures and edibles. Customers come in with a range of goals but relaxation is often high on the list, making CBD bath bombs, lotions and cannabis snacks more popular.
