54 students appointed to city youth board

Sammamish City Council appointed more than 50 students to the Sammamish Youth Board at Tuesday’s meeting.

Sammamish City Council appointed more than 50 students to the Sammamish Youth Board at Tuesday’s meeting.

The Youth Board was developed in order to give teens a chance to give back to their community through a variety of service projects.

Fifty-four people applied for the 2015-16 positions, including 32 current members. All were appointed.

The majority of students are from Sammamish, and six are from the Klahanie area. Twelve schools are represented on the board, from four school districts. The majority of the youth are from Skyline High School and Eastlake High School.

The seven-member leadership committee populated by current board members, as well as a city staff member, reviewed and evaluated the applications.

Every spring, city council appoints new youth board members for the upcoming school year. The number on the board varies each year, but usually ranges from 50 to 70 people.

Some of the projects board members participate in include adopt-a-road clean ups, local trial restorations and distributing food to those in need.

The board’s operating budget is comprised of funds from the recreation division, the board’s fundraising efforts and program fees. The budget for activities is less than $5,000 annually.
