Two chickens narrowly escaped a barn fire Thursday morning, but luckily firefighters knew how to wrangle the birds away from the burning building.
Investigators say the May Valley barn, just south of Squak and Tiger Mountain, caught fire after a heat lamp in an attached coupe was knocked over on the 24100 block of Southeast 167th Street.
It wasn’t attached to the nearby home, and no one was injured.
A call came in at about 5:10 a.m. from a neighbor who saw the blaze. By time Eastside Fire and Rescue arrived, the roof was beginning to cave in, said Cpt. Michael Geppert. “It was probably burning for a while before anyone noticed it.”
It took a team of 13 firefighters, four fire engines and a water tender about 15 minutes to contain the blaze.
Neighbors also reported explosions, which was likely the sound of tires exploding on a 1950s Chevy pickup truck, which was consumed by the fire, Geppert said.
The classic car was fairly well restored, he said. “It was a sad day out there.”
