The body of the Issaquah teenager who drowned on Sunday has been found, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.
The 16-year-old went missing while swimming with two friends above the falls near Olallie State Park on Sunday evening. The Issaquah teen and one of his friends went over the falls. The other teen reached the shore without any major injuries, but the Issaquah boy never resurfaced.
The King County Marine Rescue Dive Unit found the teenager around 6 p.m. on Thursday, about 450 feet downstream from the falls he had gone over.
“It was in the area we suspected he might be,” King County Sheriff’s Office Media Relations Officer Cindi West said. “We just couldn’t get to it before because it was too dangerous.”
Rescue units had searched for the teen Sunday and Monday, but had to suspend the search Monday evening due to the heavy current.
West said that the Sheriff’s Office is very worried about more drownings going into a warm Memorial Day weekend. The river water, she warned, is very cold and flowing rapidly due to the snow melt in the mountains.
When a swimmer encounters such icy waters, she explained, “they get cold-water shock; it shuts down their extremities so you’re not able to swim, no matter how fit you are.”
For this reason, she recommends that everyone taking part in activities on rivers this weekend wear a life jacket.
“Wear a life jacket and be wary of the rivers, because they’re cold and flowing fast,” she said.
The teenager was a student at Issaquah High School. Principal Andrea McCormick sent out an email to parents and students on Monday letting them know that grief counseling will be available on campus for anyone in need.
The teen’s name has not been released at this time.
