Hatchery receives extra funds

Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery received $2,600 from the Puget Sound Energy Foundation to support their non-profit education and volunteer programs at the hatchery.

“The foundation’s support goes a long way toward helping FISH continue to teach community members about Pacific salmon and watershed stewardship,” FISH Executive Director Gestin Suttle in a press release. “Puget Sound Energy, and now the foundation, is a big part of our success.”

The grant is part of PSEF’s continuing support of FISH. The foundation was started in 2006 with a $15 million endowment from part of the sale of InfastruX Group, a former utility construction services company. The foundation is not supported by PSE’s utility customers.

Salmon Days Rotary Run

Issaquah Rotary partners with SAMA Foundation to help fight drug addiction

For the first time, athletes and community members taking part in the Issaquah Rotary Run can help battle youth substance abuse — simply by participating in the 32nd annual run.

Issaquah Rotary this year partnered with the Science And Management of Addictions (SAMA) Foundation, to offer 10 percent of net proceeds to the foundation, as well as 100 percent of direct donations.

Dr. Robert Day, president and director emeritus of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and his wife, CJ Taylor, founding executive director of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Puget Sound Affiliate, founded SAMA after struggling to find effective treatment for their drug-addicted teenage daughter. The mission of SAMA is to eliminate the disease of substance addiction in young people by advancing research, education and treatment.

Last year, about 2,000 runners participated in Rotary Run events. This year’s Run will include a 10K run, 5K “Fun Run/Walk/Crawl” and Kids 1K Dash. Entry fees are $30 for adults, $20 for participants 15 and younger, $10 for kids (or $5 for kids without a shirt). Those who register on the day of the run will be charged $5 more.

The 10K run will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, with registration beforehand at 7:30 a.m. The 5K Fun Run/Walk/Crawl begins at 9:20 a.m., and the Kids 1K dash starts at 10:20 a.m. A post-run celebration will be at 10:30 a.m.
