Eastside Fire and Rescue were called in to extinguish several brush fires burning along westbound Interstate 90 at the High Point and Preston area at exit 20 yesterday afternoon, Monday, June 29.
A semi-truck driver who spotted the fires stopped along the busy highway and tried to extinguish the fires, using his mud flaps.
A second motorist, from a fire extinguisher company, and a WA Department of Transportation employee, also stopped to help fight the fires.
Even with the use of a fire extinguisher, their valiant efforts had little impact and the fires soon spread quickly.
When firefighters arrived, two brush fires were burning out of control.
A fire at the High Point overpass, burning an area of 5 feet by 25 feet, was quickly extinguished by fire crews.
The larger fire, 20 feet by 25 feet, burning along the on-ramp at westbound I-90, exit 20, was quickly spreading through the tall, dry grasses, and units from the Fall City Fire Department were called in to prevent the fire from spreading.
What caused the fires is not known at this time.
No damages to property or injuries were reported.
