The Rotary Club of Issaquah will bring some fun back to the streets of Issaquah on July 20 for the 16th annual Challenge Series Races.
The event allows participants with disabilities to experience the thrill of racing down Second Avenue in front of the Community Center into downtown Issaquah in a soapbox derby-type race.
For each race, two participants climb into the seat of a gravity powered car. Racers dash along Second Avenue with an able-bodied driver at the wheel and the youngster with the disability an integral part of the team and the ride.
This event began when longtime Issaquah resident Leo Finnegan found his son, Tim, wanted to race with his brothers in regular soapbox derbies, but couldn’t because of his disability. The races are supported by many volunteers from the Rotary Club of Issaquah, Life Enrichment Options and many local sponsors including Fred Meyer, I-90 Motorsports, Timber Ridge at Talus and Evergreen Ford.
Check in, the day of the race, is at 8 a.m. There are three sessions: 9-10:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to noon, and 1-2:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required.
In addition to the races, other activities include a lunch for participants, families, caregivers and volunteers.
