The city of Sammamish honored two little league softball teams Tuesday for their accomplishments at the Washington State Championships.
The Eastlake Little League Softball team, ages 9-10, and Eastlake Juniors Little League Softball team, ages 14-15, along with their coaches, were in attendance at the Sammamish City Council meeting Tuesday.
The 9- and 10-year-old players did not advance to regionals, due to their age group.
However, as state champions, the Juniors traveled to Tucson, Arizona, to play in the Western Regionals July 22. The team raised about $3,200 through its gofundme.com account, which helped pay for travel and food expenses.
The junior team won one of four games in Arizona.
“The girls fought hard, but were playing some much older, bigger teams,” it says on the team’s gofundme.com page. “They did however have an amazing time! Thanks again to a wonderful community of family and friends for all you have done to support the girls on this amazing adventure.”
Had they won, they would have competed in the Junior Softball World Series in Kirkland Aug. 22.
Sammamish Mayor Tom Vance recognized both teams for their accomplishments and for earning their state championship titles Tuesday. The teams and their coaches posed for a photo with the Sammamish council and city manager.
