City manager calls Beaver Lake Park shooting ‘especially shocking in Sammamish’

Sammamish City Manager Lyman Howard released the following statement on Thursday regarding the shooting confrontation at Beaver Lake Park that left one man dead on Wednesday:

“It brought great sadness to us all when the news emerged that a man had been run over and killed at Beaver Lake Park Wednesday afternoon. Here at City Hall, and throughout the community, I know everyone’s thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and the many others mourning his loss.

King County deputies and Sammamish police are continuing to investigate. They’re looking for a suspect, or suspects, driving a small, gold- or tan-colored SUV. The SUV ran over the victim after he confronted someone who was burglarizing his vehicle.

This kind of news is especially shocking in Sammamish, a community where there is very little violent crime. As more details become available, I hope we’ll better understand how a relatively common crime — a car prowl — turned into a tragedy.

Like many quiet, affluent communities, Sammamish sees its share of car prowlers. Typically, they drive in from out of town, look for opportunities, and then leave. The lesson for all of us: Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle.

As we absorb this very sad news, and think of the victim’s loved ones, please do your part to keep our community safe. If you see something suspicious, your first step should be to call 9-1-1. In Wednesday’s case, a number of people shared information with friends on social media, but didn’t call the police.

Thanks to those who did call in, and if any of you come upon information that might be valuable in this investigation, please call the King County Sheriff’s Office at 206-296-3311.”
