The Issaquah City Council voted unanimously at Monday’s meeting to create a new position in the city government.
The intergovernmental relations manager will coordinate between the City Council, Mayor Fred Butler, city staff and regional committees to ensure that the city is accurately represented at the regional level.
The recommended salary for the position is between $90,912 and $116,052 per year.
“That position is critical to helping us achieve all of our goals on our Regional Agenda,” Council President Stacy Goodman said.
The City Council adopted its Regional Agenda in May in order to collaborate with other communities in the area on matters of transportation, public safety, growth management, affordable housing, economic development, the environment, human services and schools, according to the city.
“If you’re not at the table at these regional issues, where important policy and funding decisions are being made that affect our town …you simply don’t get served,” Councilmember Paul Winterstein said. “This is a bold step for us — it’s part of us taking back our town.”
Winterstein said that the future intergovernmental relations manager could be anyone from a current city staffer to an East Coast resident, but whoever it is, “it should be one very exciting position to create something new in a very dynamic area.”
