Crossing party lines for climate change

A group called Eastside Organizers, held a rally Wednesday in front of Congressman Dave Reichert’s office in Issaquah, to bring awareness to climate change and the consequences earth faces if Americans don’t cut back on consumption of fossil fuels.

A group called Eastside Organizers, a local chapter of Organizing For Action, a nonprofit established to support President Obama’s agenda, held a rally Wednesday in front of Congressman Dave Reichert’s office in Issaquah, to bring awareness to climate change and the consequences earth faces if Americans don’t cut back on consumption of fossil fuels.

The irony is that Reichert is a republican.

They were not there to chastise the congressman, rather to thank him. Reichert has said on the record that he supports an amendment stating that, “Congress accepts the scientific findings of the EPA that climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for public health and welfare.”

The group chanted “Thank you Reichert, climate change, climate change, what’s your plan?”

Sandra Castell, is the volunteer team leader of the group, the largest and most active OFA group in Washington State. Eastside Organizers encompasses District 8 and includes Sammamish and Issaquah.

She said this 113th Congress is even more obstinate than the last.

“We’re going to hold them accountable now,” Castell said. “Climate change is real.”

She said 468 out of 535 members of Congress are up for re-election and that 20 percent of them are climate deniers. The group then read off a list of all the climate deniers, followed by “shame on you.”

“We’re calling them all out on climate change,” she said. “There’s potential here for real legislation.”

Reichert was appointed to be co-chair of the renewable energy and energy efficiency caucus in February, so he has the opportunity to encourage change.

Similar rallies were held throughout the nation at the same time.

The rally also included members of moveon.org and members of the Sierra Club Beyond Coal Action Committee.
