A 60-year-old May Valley man died Thursday after being struck by a falling tree while he was rolling out his ATV from a garage to take a drive around the area.
It’s the only casualty reported so far as the result of downed trees and power lines from the freezing rain, ice and snow, said Sgt. Cindi West with the King County Sheriff’s Office.
The man lived on a large piece of property in a heavily wooded area. One of the trees was weighted too heavily by the snow and ice and fell unexpectedly at about 9:45 Thursday morning on the 15300 block of 231st Avenue, just south of Issaquah.
Family inside the house heard the collapse and discovered him.
“He could have been walking out there, and the tree would have fallen,” West said. “It’s just unfortunate.”
The sheriff’s office was encouraging people to stay home and indoors until the ice warning lifts. It’s been stretched to about 2 p.m. Thursday.
It also warned people who lose power not to run BBQs or gas generators inside the home, as people often die or get seriously injured from carbon monoxide poisoning.
