Eastlake students take stance against heart disease

Eastlake High School has gone completely red for the month of January.

Eastlake High School has gone completely red for the month of January.

The school started hosting its “Red Out for Heart Events” Jan. 10 in the spirit of raising awareness about heart disease.

Eastlake joined by Skyline High School students Thursday for their annual 5K Raptor Run in honor of late Eastlake school resource officer Stan Chapin.

Students will also celebrate community spirit during the home basketball games versus Bothell on Jan. 18, starting with JV at 4:15 p.m., varsity girls at 6 p.m., and varsity boys at 7:30 p.m.

Students, athletes, cheerleaders and fans of the Wolves will wear red “Rock the Beat” T-shirts for the game. The limited edition T-shirts will be available to purchase at school the week of the event and at the games.

Fans are encouraged to wear their shirts to the Jan. 18 game to show school spirit and commitment to fight heart disease. During the game, students will collect donations for the American Heart Association and educate game-goers about heart disease prevention and warning signs.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading killer of Americans, leading to one death every 39 seconds. That equates to 2,200 women, men, and children per day.  Research funded by the American Heart Association has yielded major advances, such as the heart-lung machine, CPR/ AED, life-extending drugs, pacemakers, bypass surgery and surgical techniques to repair heart defects and save lives.
