Friends of Lake Sammamish State Park soliciting donations for playground

The park advocacy group needs $250,000 to supplement state funding for the project.

The Friends of Lake Sammamish State Park are seeking donations to fund the opening of a playground in 2016.

The state legislature approved $750,000 for the playground but, with a $1 million price tag, the final quarter of the project’s cost must be funded by donations. A countdown on the playground’s donation site, www.Playground4All.com puts the deadline at May 1, 2016.

The playground designed by SiteLines Park and Playground Products is slated to replace two playgrounds in Lake Sammamish State Park. Those playgrounds, according to the Friends, are obsolete in terms of safety standards and disability compliance. The two playgrounds also serve two different age groups — toddlers and older children 5-to-12 years old — yet are inconveniently separate for parents of children from both.

The new design includes a zip line, rotating and fixed nets, musical instruments, a sculptured “mushroom house,” an explorable “coal mine” and a 9-foot statue of a blue heron that will spray patrons with cooling mist.

Debbie Berto is coordinating the fundraising campaign for the Friends.”While we anticipate corporations and foundations [will] contribute, we are also counting on lots of children and families to participate in fundraising,” Berto said in a press release.

The campaign had raised $250 as of Monday morning. The first $50,000 will be matched by a private donor.

Donations can be made at Playground4All.com or P.O. Box 605, Issaquah, Wash. 98027.
