Sammamish Rotary honors students of month
The Rotary Club of Sammamish this month honored four students.
In a newly added program, Eastside Catholic High School students Michelle Drews was chosen for math and Jessica Gober was chosen for science.
Skyline High School students Kevin Clark was chosen for math and Frances Hsu for science.
Drews is a senior, and the daughter of Tom and Ann Drews. She listed her interests as school literary journal vice editor, National Honor Society, Polish Club, biology, chemistry, anatomy, neuroscience, computer science, math, languages, creative writing and ancient history. Drews also enjoys volleyball, creative writing, drawing, reading, sewing, game programming and swimming, among other things. Her achievements include numerous student of the month awards, student of the year in numerous subjects, National Merit Commended Scholar, third place at a biotechnology expo, varsity volleyball and more. She hopes to earn a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and go to graduate school to study medicine, neuroscience or biotechnology.
Gober is a senior, and daughter of Ken and Tamara Gober. She listed her interests as National Honor Society, student ministry and writing novels. She is a National Merit Commended Scholar, has received the Harvard Book Award and has been student of the year in AP chemistry, world history and math. Gober is interested in writing and publishing novels, as well as working in a field with infectious agents or combating bioterrorism.
Clark is a senior, and the son of Peter Clark. He said he enjoys math, science, soccer, skiing, chess and math clubs, piano and computer programming. He has received a National Merit Commendation, is an IB diploma candidate and has participated in Washington state math and chess championships. Clark said that he hopes to study computer science, hopefully at Stanford, and work in computer science research.
Hsu is a senior, and the daughter of Chih Shun Hsu. She listed her interests as IB biology, chemistry, physics and math methods, as well as piano, reading English and Chinese novels, watching Gilmore Girls and cross-stitching. Hsu participated in Harborview Medical Center’s teen volunteer program this summer and also volunteers at Swedish Medical Center and Music Works Northwest. She has received a National Merit Commendation, and is an IB diploma candidate. Hsu also participates in cross country, Key club, biology club, National Honor Society, French club and math club. Hsu hopes to attend a research university and major in biochemistry, possibly to become a pediatrician and specialize in neonatology.
Scholar athlete recognized
Issaquah High School student Christian Rennie was selected as the scholar athlete of the month for September by the Issaquah Booster Club and Red Robin Restaurant.
I.H.S. football coach Chris Bennett nominated Rennie, writing, “Christian is one of our team captains and starts on both the offensive and defensive lines. … He is a great leader both on and off the field and is a great example of what a student athlete should be.”
Christian is ASB President and involved in his church. He is currently volunteering with “Athletes for Kids” and is mentoring a young boy in the community. This spring, he says he hopes to add his talents to the track team throwing the shot put and discus. He has been offered a scholarship to play football for the United States Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
