Submissions for the fourth annual Influence the Choice Video Contest are due April 15.

Submissions for the fourth annual Influence the Choice Video Contest are due April 15.

The competition is open to sixth through 12th graders in the Issaquah School District and those who attend Eastlake High School or Inglewood Middle School in Sammamish.

The video project allows students to show “how talking openly and honestly about drug abuse or mental illness can influence friends, parents, teachers, and others in [the] community to choose healthily, positive lifestyles,” according to a city of Sammamish press release.

Influence the Choice is a drug-prevention alliance for youth. The organization aims to prevent or reduce youth substance abuse within the Issaquah School District service area, according to the organization’s webpage.

“While the majority of students don’t abuse drugs/alcohol in our community, almost every student is confronted with a choice about alcohol or drugs at some time during their school years,” according to the Influence the Choice webpage.

There are three topics under which people can submit a two-minute video: “My Choice to be Healthy — What Inspires Me to Make Positive Choices,” “What I Wish My Parents Knew — Youth Telling Adults How to Talk to Their Kids About Being Drug-Free” and “To My Younger Self — Telling Middle Schoolers What They Can Do to Stay Drug-Free.”

First, second and third place videos will win cash prizes in each of the three categories. Those winning videos may be broadcast in participating schools and on the cities of Issaquah and Sammamish TV stations.

The videos will be judged by a panel of students and adults from the area. Judging will take place at the King County Library Service Center in Issaquah on May 4 at 5:30 p.m.

Influence the Choice is still looking for judges. To apply, email Matt Compston at compton75@gmail.com.

Judges will receive video entries April 18.
