After more than a year of waiting, repairs to the Interstate 90 bridge over Front Street will take place no later than May, a state Department of Transportation spokesperson confirmed this week.
The $1.2 million project has been previously pushed from tentative start dates in March and April.
But on Monday WSDOT spokesperson Lisa Van Cise said contractor Massana Construction Inc. had already completed fabrication of a replacement girder for the bridge. Massana now awaits city and state approval of its plans to safely remove and demolish the damaged girder, Van Cise said.
“We’re at the point where the materials are all ready,” she said. “Now we’re just waiting on them to check all the boxes.”
The bridge sustained damage to its 114-foot long southern girder March 13 after a Recology CleanScapes truck collided into it with its deployed hydraulic bed.
Though inspectors deemed the bridge safe for travel soon after the accident, state officials have kept the eastbound right shoulder of I-90 off-limits to drivers as a precaution.
A visible puncture has remained in the bridge’s concrete shell more than a year after the collision.
“Soon drivers won’t have to look at that unsightly hole anymore,” Van Cise said.
