Residents of Issaquah braved the summer heat Tuesday afternoon to decorate the sidewalks of the Issaquah Community Center. The Chalk Art Festival, put on by the city’s arts commission, attracted varying degree of artists to show off their talents.
Jacob Mileski, 6.5, was designing his square alongside his mother, Kathy, and younger brother. Kathy said they recently moved to the city and were looking for things to do.
For Darian Talbot it was a chance to show off his creative skills. He spent over an hour crafting a set of roses in a vase on his section of concrete.
Mandy Anderson, 20, and her brother Ian, 14, stopped by to create a piece which they felt represented Issaquah, a salmon crossing sign.
“It’s what Issaquah is known for,” said Mandy Anderson.
For 8-year-old Emily Cluff her rainforest piece was inspired by her bedroom which was painted by her cousin.
Over 200 people participated in the event, creating designs along the sidewalk. The winners were divided by age groups. In the preschool category, 6 years and under, Aofie Buckle, James Collette and Margot MacInnes were the winners. For the elementary, 7 to 11-years-old group, Sharda Raina, Emily Cluff and Anumita Chopra won. In secondary, 12 to 15-years-old, Laura Charette, Kieran Dong and Shelvin Maharaj took the top spots and in the adult category Rajesh Baheti, Jane Kendall and Sudha Baheti were the winners. In the family category the Cluff family, Loestscher/Dillmeier and Gerdes families were picked as the best.
