Issaquah City Administrator Leon Kos has announced his retirement, after 33 years in one of the city’s top jobs.
According to a press release from the city today, his last day in the role will be April 30.
“It’s with mixed emotions today that I announce my retirement,” Kos said to city staff. “While I am thrilled to spend more time with my grandchildren, I know this transition won’t be easy for me. I consider it a great honor to work with so many of Issaquah’s outstanding public servants, who have an incredible dedication to this community.”
Kos was first hired in 1977, making him one of Issaquah’s longest running employees.
“Leon stands as a model among city administrators, and with warmth and understanding, encourages city employees to do their very best for the people of Issaquah,” said Mayor Ava Frisinger. “Leon is extraordinarily talented at complex negotiating, and making the impossible happen.”
Kos – a member of the Kiwanis Club of Issaquah for more than three decades – also sits on the Mountains to Sound Board of Directors. A champion of smart growth, he highly values the preservation of open space, and oversaw the acquisition of countless natural areas for the City.
“Leon is also a stalwart advocate for the environment, and has mentored and supported many in their advocacy,” Frisinger said. “He is a visionary and a believer in leaving the places in which he lives better than when he arrived. He understands true sustainability in its three-fold nature: people, place and prosperity.”
The Mayor’s office will be working with a recruiting firm to search for Issaquah’s next City Administrator, which is expected to take four to six months.
In the interim, current Deputy City Administrator Joe Meneghini will serve as Acting City Administrator.
