Issaquah schools can boast of having the most involved parents in the state.
The Parent Teacher Student Association has almost 90 percent of parent membership this year, and it expects that number to grow.
The parents make up about 10 percent of the state’s PTSA members, while the district only has about 1 percent of the state’s students, said Janine Kotan the Issaquah PTSA council president.
“I think it’s become an expectation in Issaquah,” she said of getting parents to sign up. “We have intelligent parents, and yea, they want to be involved in their students lives.”
Strong parent support has also helped the group have more weight in Olympia.
When the PTSA presented its platform at the state capital, three of its six issues were from Issaquah School District parents.
The PTSA’s primary goal is advocating for children, Kotan said. “The more members that we have, the bigger our voice is.”
The district now has a group in every school, except the alternative program at Tiger Mountain Community High.
So far this year 12 of the 23 groups had 100 percent membership, a figure that compares the number of students to parents.
