Issaquah’s first skate competition to raise awareness for new skate park project

Skate Issaquah and the Issaquah Drug Free Community Coalition will put on the city’s first skate competition this Saturday to support construction of a new skate park.

The competition will feature demonstrations from pro skaters, skating clinics and contests. It takes place 10 a.m. at the skate park on the east side of the Issaquah Community Center.

Skate Issaquah is using the event to promote its fundraising campaign for a new skate park in Tibbetts Valley Park.

Earlier this year, the city of Issaquah was set to begin construction on the Tibbetts Valley skate park. But citizens from the Issaquah Drug Free Community Coalition asked the Issaquah City Council to scrap the approved $363,575 project in favor of a beefed up design coming in at nearly $500,000.

The council agreed to delay construction for a year and task Parks and Recreation with applying for a $75,000 county grant. The terms of that grant require the county payout to be matched dollar-for-dollar by community fundraising.

Skate Issaquah began an online GoFundMe campaign in June to raise matching funds for the skate park. The organization had raised $6,800 as of 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Saturday’s skate competition is free and open to all ages with registration. The Issaquah Community Center is located at 301 Rainier Blvd. S.
