While the Sammamish Police Department received nearly two dozen calls reporting illegal fireworks, which is punishable by a $1,000 fine, the department did not issue any tickets for illegal discharge over the Fourth of July weekend, Chief Nate Elledge said.
“For the most part, people obeyed the fireworks ordinance this year,” he said in an email. “I think that people were a little more cautious this year given the increased fire danger.”
The department received 19 calls July 4 between 9 p.m. and midnight. There was also one domestic violence call, a car accident and one vandalism caused by a firework reported between that time period July 4.
During the Tuesday Sammamish City Council meeting, council members gave kudos to residents for broadly obeying the law. Although, many councilmembers said residents on the lake, specifically Lake Sammamish and Pine Lake, lit off quite a show after the city-planned Fourth on the Plateau.
“It is interesting to note that we did not receive any calls for fireworks on Pine Lake or Lake Sammamish,” Elledge said. “We did respond to a fireworks complaint on Beaver Lake, but the officer arrived after the fact and was unable to determine who set off the fireworks.”
Sammamish police have only issued a couple citations for fireworks over the past three years.
