What do you call a duck who lights off fireworks in Sammamish?

Answer: A fire-quacker — with a $1,000 fine.

This was one of the jokes the city of Sammamish @CityofSammamish on Twitter made during some lighthearted banter with the Sammamish Police Department @SammamishPD on Tuesday.

Leading up to the Fourth of July weekend, officials are trying hard to inform residents that all fireworks are illegal within city limits — especially now that the recent Klahanie-area annexation means more than 10,000 people from unincorporated King County, where fireworks are allowed, must follow these rules, too.

In Sammamish, discharging fireworks comes with a $1,000 fine and possessing them is a $500 fine.

Instead, officials encourage residents to visit professional displays, such as the Fourth on the Plateau event, to view fireworks.

“Our main concern is the safety of the citizens and neighbors,” Sgt. Francis Carlson told the Reporter.

Last year, fireworks caused 240 fires throughout the state of Washington, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. Of those, wildland and vegetation fires made up about 80 percent of firework-caused incidents, which resulted in $12,555 in loss and damages.

“Summer weather conditions can make vegetation extremely dry and susceptible to fire,”according to the state’s press release. “While discharging fireworks, a small fire can easily get out of control if the fuels (grass and other vegetation) are present.”

Fireworks are also banned in the surrounding cities of Issaquah, Redmond and Bellevue.

Additionally, sky lanterns — miniature balloons that rely on open flame to float in the air— are also banned within Eastside Fire and Rescue’s service area, including Sammamish and Issaquah.
