A new organic sandwich shop caught buzz this week among Sammamish residents eager for a quick meal made from fresh ingredients plucked from local farms.

Resident Daisy Steiner sat outside Homegrown, the sustainable sub shop, midmorning Tuesday. Steiner and her friend giggled over an egg, avocado, cheese sandwich on gluten-free bread because the store manager had remembered their faces from the soft opening the day before.

“It was so good yesterday, we decided to come back for breakfast,” Steiner said.

This is the ninth Homegrown location since the business first opened in Seattle in 2009. The shop is located within the Sammamish Highlands shopping center in a small corner store off of 228th Avenue Northeast.

Steiner, who has lived in Sammamish for 5 years, and friend Rachel Timmins, of Sammamish, had never eaten at a Homegrown before, as the closest location is in Redmond.

“We had just heard so much about it,” Steiner said. “(Previously,) we had to go pretty far to get this fresh food.”

Steiner wasn’t just talking about the other Eastside Homegrown locations.

There aren’t a lot of on-the-go options that follow Sammamish residents’ generally environmentally conscious ideals, Homegrown co-owner Ben Friedman said.

He and his business partner Brad Gillis, who were raised in Seattle and have been friends since kindergarten, set out several years ago to change the food system in America.

“We want to be certain there are no pesticides in our foods, no other additives,” Friedman said.

In keeping with the local, sustainable vibe, the two opened Sprouting Farms in 2014 just 30 minutes from the flagship store in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle. The small farm, located in Woodinville, provides USDA-certified organic produce for its store’s seasonal menus.

Other local partners include a Seattle cheese provider, Beecher’s Handmade Cheese; a Woodburn all-natural chicken provider, Urbn Bruce; and the Seattle gluten-free cookie provider, WOW Baking Co.

Friedman and Gillis consider the environmental impacts of every decision they make — from the materials used in their stores, to the compostable packaging and the organic,  antibiotic-, hormone- and cage-free items and ingredients picked from local farms.

“It’s amazing how fresh it can taste when it come from the Earth,” Friedman said.

Sammamish Homegrown General Manager Dominic Tullio said the Sammamish store was pretty busy early this week, with many people taking advantage of popular breakfast and lunch options.

“You can’t go wrong with a turkey, bacon, avocado (sub),” he said.
