Just in time for the holiday season, the city of Sammamish received another gift from resident Mary Pigott.
The Sammamish City Council unanimously authorized for the property transfer of a 20-acre parcel of land at Big Rock Park, which was donated from Pigott to the city, effective Dec. 31, at the council’s regular meeting on Tuesday.
“Mary, thank you on behalf of the city and personally, for giving Sammamish a central park,” Councilmember Tom Hornish said.
The transfer of the 20-acre section of land, referred to as section B, marks the second parcel of the property Pigott has donated to the city. It is southeast of Big Rock parcel A, which the city accepted from Pigott in 2010. At a future date, Pigott plans to transfer a third portion of the property to the city, for a grand total of about 51 acres of land.
Pigott, a local resident since 1972, told the council she was “delighted” to be able to share the land and noted the importance of preserving the wildlife the park inhabits.
“There aren’t a lot of conditions on my gift. It’s pretty much the same as it was last time — keep it as a park. Absolute condition, can’t do anything else with it,” she said.
City Manager Lyman Howard said the city will work with the community on programming with the new property in the upcoming year. The property won’t be accessible to the public until the city makes improvements.
