King County prosecutors have charged a Kirkland man with the second-degree rape of an Issaquah woman.

Kirkland resident Steven McCanless was badly beaten by the victim’s husband and a friend following the incident in downtown Issaquah on May 23, and spent much of the past four weeks in a coma in a Seattle hospital.

Unable to be interviewed due to the severity of his injuries, McCanless was formally charged by the county on Thursday, June 10.

Both of the assault suspects, an Issaquah man and a Renton man, were initially booked into the King County Jail on charges of Assault in the First Degree, but were later released. The King County Prosecutors Office has yet to file charges against the two men.

The husband, wife and friends, including McCanless, had been drinking at an Issaquah bar when the woman began to feel ill. Her husband took her to a friend’s house in the 400 block of Northeast Birch Street to get some sleep, and returned to the bar.

McCanless realized that he was intoxicated, left the bar and returned to the house.

According to the Kirkland Reporter, the victim later told police that she awoke to find McCanless with his hand down her pants and touching her inappropriately.
